On the homestead blog this week, a couple of cam screenshots (showing all five cats), a couple of GIFs (showing Poppa at the cabins, and a day inside the house), and more for your weekly #Caturday 🐈

Just got back from a trip to Costco. Certainly different than the last time we went there a couple of months ago. No rationing, and plenty of stocks of everything, but lots of social distancing signs and floor markers, cashier screens, etc.

Today’s Micro.blog color challenge is indigo. That’s a tricky one… the best I can come up with is these irises, though they might be straddling the line between indigo and violet? 📷🌈 #mbmay

On the homestead blog this week: followup on Gert, news about ducklings, a duck and bird GIF, and various chicken pics. Yep, it’s #FlockFriday 🦆🐓

Today’s color is blue. Appropriately, it is also Peace Officers Memorial Day, so I lowered our flag to half-staff, with the illuminated flag and a blue sky enhanced by night mode. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. 📷🌈 #mbmay

My first sourdough bread loaves were a bit disappointing… they kinda sagged (and merged), so I guess had too much hydration. Tasted fine, though not particularly sourdough-y; I gather the flavor will improve as the starter ages. 🍞

Pictures of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse and Yaquina Bay Bridge, taken in April 2003 during an anniversary trip to the Oregon coast. (Hey kids, in the Before Times people could actually travel and stay places.) #ThrowbackThursday

My first use of my sourdough starter: pancakes for breakfast. Turned out well, more light and fluffy than with Bisquick. Today, I’m making sourdough bread. 🥞👨‍🍳

Today’s color is green. So many options, but let’s go with this recent aerial photo of our flowerbeds, with the green grass and trees. 📷🌈 #mbmay

It seems the What’s It Wednesday question was a stumper. The answer: it’s a gate latch cable, used to open a gate latch from the other side. Here’s an example of one in use, on a veggie garden gate. #WhatsItWednesday

Let’s play What’s It Wednesday again. What do you think this is? Hopefully not too obvious. #WhatsItWednesday

Today’s color is yellow. An unused shot of yellow straw, yellow bee nucs, yellow bees, and a yellow tie-down strap in the back of our truck when we recently picked up a couple of nucs and other supplies. 📷🌈 #mbmay

It’s alive, ALIVE! It took 17 days, but my first sourdough starter has finally achieved doubling in size, and passes the float test. Now I have to figure out what to do with it. 🍞

Question: how much would you expect to pay for fresh eggs from a roadside farm stand? Our chickens are laying about a dozen a day at present, faster than we can give them away. We’re planning to put them by the road to sell. 🐓🥚

Today’s color is orange. Over the weekend we had a nice sneak peek of summer, eating BBQ steak and orange sweet potato (or kumara as it’s called in New Zealand) on our deck. 📷🌈 #mbmay

The Lord of the Rings movie series 🍿 #MediaMonday

This trilogy is a favorite of ours, with a good story, nice scenery, etc. For 16 years around Christmas / New Year time we have a traditional marathon of the extended editions of all three movies — 12 hours worth.

The Micro.blog mini-challenge this week is color-a-day photos. Today: red. As part of wanting to go to the store less at present, we’re trying various food delivery services, including Farmbox Direct. 📷🌈 #mbmay

On the homestead blog: yesterday we picked up and set up two nucs — nucleus bee hives, i.e. small starter hives. 🐝
