Listening to the Release Notes podcast, I was sad to hear @DazeEnd and @joec say they don’t plan to hold another conference this year (and possibly ever); I really enjoyed attending last year. But I totally understand their reasoning.

I sell my Dejal Time Out app via a supporter model, and like to help support other creators that I enjoy.
I’m a supporter / patron / member of several podcasts, including (in alphabetic order):
- 512 Pixels: Apple-related tech podcast
- CGP Grey: YouTube creator
- Core Intuition: Apple-related tech
- Do By Friday: ostensibly a challenge podcast
- Hello Internet: two dudes talking
- The Incomparable: games, movies, etc
- Relay FM: lots of podcasts
- Release Notes: business, everything but the code
- Six Colors: Apple-related tech
- TechMeme Ride Home: daily tech news
- Two Headed Girl: increasing gender awareness
I typically go for the $10/month or annual equivalent level, where available (I do prefer annual). There are lots of podcasts that don’t have memberships that I’d support if they did, including the Accidental Tech Podcast and The Talk Show; I contribute to those by buying their merch.
Check out those podcasts if they sound interesting, and please consider helping to support them if you enjoy their work.
(Sometime I plan to do a series of posts on the podcasts that I enjoy, if that sounds interesting.)
Congratulations to Stephen and Myke of Relay FM on their five year anniversary! My favo(u)rite podcast network; I listen to numerous of their shows, and am a member (highly recommended, if only for all the bonus content).
A fascinating and insightful discussion on the Tumblr acquisition by Automattic on one of my favorite podcasts, Core Intuition. I recommend giving a listen if you’re interested.
Ironic: the “Don’t Keep Us in Suspense” episode is stuck at “downloading… 100%”.
WWDC week recap: Six Colors, Connected, Breakpoints
Continuing my week-delayed recap of my WWDC week.
Last year, while exploring San Jose, I happened to see Jason Snell and Dan Moren of Six Colors recording their secret subscriber podcast:
This year, on Wednesday Jason mentioned in the Six Colors member Slack that he and Dan would do a recording in about half an hour. I was in my hotel room, catching up on things, and happened to see that. So I quickly hopped on a scooter and zipped downtown, arriving to find four other fans of their work. Dan and Jason soon arrived, got set up, and began recording:
The massive live audience of five guys, including me:
Dan’s selfie; hey, there’s me, with my beard blowing in the breeze, as it does:
I then headed to AltConf, and chatted with some developers and others in the community, and had some passable rosé wine:
That evening, I headed back to the Hammer Theatre for the final podcast live show of the week, Relay FM’s Connected show. Once again I was up on the balcony, at the very front (the same seat as for the ATP show; not a bad spot). Here are the front few rows of the audience (many familiar faces down there):
Here are the stars of the show, Stephen Hackett, Myke Hurley, and Federico Viticci:
Jason Snell joined them on stage to help decide a winner by asking Siri to flip a coin:
Federico revealed his surprise (no spoilers here; see the show notes if curious):
They concluded with the two founders of Relay FM talking about their upcoming 5 year anniversary… or rather Stephen talking, and Myke trying not to cry:
After that, I headed back to the Ritz nightclub for the James Dempsey and the Breakpoints happy hour:
A brief word of thanks for App Camp for Girls, for which this was a fundraiser:
I didn’t stick around for the actual music (which I’ve heard many times before), as it was again too noisy for my taste.
(Edit: I was going to do another post on Thursday and Friday, but decided to just append it here, as nothing particularly interesting happened.)
That’s pretty much it for my WWDC week. On Thursday I just studied a bunch of SwiftUI tutorials, took some pictures of planes, and attended the AltConf “Week in Review” session:
Then Friday I headed home. And glad to be back… except for the WWDC-crud I brought home with me; I’ve been coughing up a storm for the past week, barely able to speak. Slowly improving, though.
WWDC week recap: Micro.blog, The Talk Show
Continuing my week-delayed recap of my WWDC week: on Tuesday I attended a meetup of the Micro.blog community from about noon (I was early):
Here’s a group photo (not taken by me):
The Micro.blog service is like a social layer on personal blogs, encouraging the idea of owning your own content, instead of donating it to social silos. As you may know, I host my Dejal, Dejus, and Yellow Cottage Homestead blogs on my own server, and cross-post them to Micro.blog, Twitter, Mastodon, and Facebook. Micro.blog is my preferred social network; the people there are generally more friendly than on Twitter, in large part to the way the service is designed, without casual likes, so people often reply with a more meaningful comment if they enjoy a post.
It was great to chat with lots of people there; some I’d met in person before, some only online, some new.
I was planning to attend the Automators meetup after the Micro.blog one, but by the time I left there, I didn’t have time, since I was going to meet with a client. Maybe next year!
That evening, I headed to the California Theatre for another podcast recording show, The Talk Show Live:
The foyer of the theater is rather fancy… and was very crowded:
I sat in the balcony, as I often do, though a bit further back than last year:
Here’s our host, John Gruber of Daring Fireball, pulling a Playdate out of his pocket:
John was joined on stage by Apple execs Greg Joswiak and Craig Federighi for a fascinating discussion (video and audio versions are available if you missed it):
Afterwards, I scooted back to my hotel room for the night:
Tomorrow, Wednesday’s highlights.
A very amusing Relay FM Connected podcast live show last night in San Jose. #dejus365
I think my fridge must have heard the Reconcilable Differences episode on John Siracusa’s fridge, as it decided to fail: the fridge part is no longer getting cold. Should be repairable, though.
